INFO

Welcome to the W.G.Pearson School Band!  We are the only elementary school in the district with a band program! The program provides students an opportunity to learn music through fun, hands-on experiences! We start band in Third & Fourth grade (beginning band) and have an advanced band for  fifth graders. Students meet for band class everyday for approximately 40 minutes.  Our band students are held to very high expectations, are required to practice and perform in several shows per year. Band is a one of a kind musical experience that teaches teamwork, builds self- confidence and is fun!

                                     Beginning Band

Class Time: Mon.-Fri.  3rd Grade: 12:00 - 12:45     4th Grade: 12:50-1:30

This class is intended to teach 3rd & 4th Grade students the basic fundamentals of the band instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or percussion). Students do not need to have any prior knowledge in music; they will all be taught how to put instruments together, care & maintenance, how to read music, and how to play their instrument.   Students usually begin band in third or fourth grade and move to the advanced band in 5th grade. Band is a year-long class and is offered as an elective. Students are required to bring their instruments / music books to band everyday and are expected to practice on a daily basis. Parents must be able to provide an instrument and a method book (Most students who are in Band rent their instruments through our local Music & Arts store in Durham, NC.) The ultimate goal is for students to continue and advance through each level of band. Performances are required.

                                           Advanced Band

Class Time: Mon.-Fri.

5th Grade: 1:35 - 2:15

This group is composed of 5th grade band students who have played their instrument for at least one full year. This is also a year-long class and is offered as an elective. Parents must be able to provide an instrument / method book. Students are required to have all of the same materials as the beginning band but they will also need  "Standard of Excellence" Book 1 for their instrument.  Students must be proficient at scales and sight-reading.  Students will focus on performance aspects such as blend, balance, dynamics, pitch, etc. Performances are required. The ultimate goal is for students to be able to play challenging music and be proficient at giving performances; this level prepares them for middle school band.
